Police demote two Delta officers over POS extortion scandal

The Delta State Police Command has demoted two officers after they were found guilty of extorting a motorist in a case that gained widespread attention following the circulation of a viral video.

The officers, Inspector Augustine Jeremiah and Corporal Miracle Ehirim, were captured receiving money from a motorist through a Point-of-Sale (POS) terminal inside the C Division Police Station in Asaba.

Confirming the disciplinary action in a statement issued on Tuesday, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, said the Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, approved the outcome of the orderly room trial, which found both officers guilty of misconduct.

According to the statement, the officers were convicted of disobedience to lawful order, extortion, and discreditable conduct, offences punishable under the Police Act, 2020.

As part of the sanctions, Jeremiah was demoted from the rank of Inspector to Sergeant, while Ehirim was reduced from Corporal to Constable.

Speaking on the development, Oyeniyi reiterated that the Nigeria Police Force has a zero-tolerance policy on extortion and the use of electronic payment platforms within police facilities.

“The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, unequivocally prohibits the use of Point-of-Sale terminals and other electronic payment platforms within police stations and formations,” the commissioner said.

He further stressed that no police officer is permitted to demand or receive money from members of the public under any guise.

“Any officer found culpable will face appropriate disciplinary action,” he warned.

Oyeniyi urged officers of the command to maintain professionalism, integrity and respect for the rights of citizens, describing the punishment as a clear warning against unethical conduct.

“This disciplinary action should serve as a deterrent and reflects the Command’s commitment to discipline, accountability and public trust,” he added.

The commissioner also encouraged residents to continue reporting cases of police misconduct through the appropriate channels, assuring that every complaint against erring officers would be thoroughly investigated and handled in accordance with the law.
