The Anambra State Police Command has introduced a new monitoring system to strengthen supervision of police checkpoints, patrol teams and other operational activities across the state.
The initiative was announced by the command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, in a statement on Sunday, following concerns raised during recent security stakeholders’ interactive sessions held across the three senatorial districts of the state.
Ikenga said the monitoring mechanism was designed to improve accountability and professionalism within the force and curb alleged cases of extortion, harassment and other forms of misconduct by police officers.
He said the command’s operational control rooms would now exercise closer oversight of patrol formations and checkpoints, while Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers and Tactical Team Commanders would be required to account for the conduct of officers deployed to strategic locations.
“Reports and complaints relating to misconduct, extortion or other forms of unprofessional conduct will be promptly received, monitored and escalated for necessary action,” Ikenga quoted the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, as saying.»
The police commissioner also warned officers against abusing their positions or exploiting members of the public.
According to the statement, CP Ama directed all Area Commanders, DPOs and Tactical Team Commanders to ensure strict compliance with the new directive.
He warned that officers found engaging in extortion or other forms of misconduct would face disciplinary action in line with the law and established police regulations.
The command urged residents to support the initiative by reporting incidents of police extortion, harassment and other unprofessional conduct through its established communication channels.
Members of the public can contact the Operational Control Room on 07039194332, the Police Public Relations Officer on 08039334002, or the Commissioner of Police’s dedicated WhatsApp line on 09169531886.
The command said the measure formed part of its commitment to promoting professional, people-oriented and accountable policing in Anambra State, adding that credible complaints would receive prompt attention and appropriate action.
