Nigeria’s Super Falcons thrashed Comoros 5-0 in the second leg of their second-round qualifying tie for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, United States, to advance with a 7-0 aggregate victory on Tuesday.
The 10-time African champions dominated the encounter at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, Ogun State, having won the first leg 2-0 on Friday.
They will now face Morocco in the third round of the African qualifying series.
Toni Payne and Uchenna Kanu scored twice each, while Christy Ucheibe converted a penalty as Nigeria turned their first-leg advantage into a convincing victory.
The hosts started strongly but suffered an early setback when captain Rasheedat Ajibade was forced off in the 23rd minute following a collision with a Comoros defender.
Folashade Ijamilusi came on to replace her.
Nigeria eventually broke the deadlock in the 41st minute when Kanu capitalised on a goalkeeping error before setting up Payne, who finished to give the hosts a 1-0 lead on the night and extend their aggregate advantage to 3-0.
The Super Falcons maintained their dominance after the break, with interim head coach Augustine Eguavoen introducing Blessing Okpe for Gift Monday at the start of the second half.
Kanu doubled Nigeria’s lead in the 58th minute, heading home a cross from Ijamilusi.
The forward thought she had scored again three minutes later, but her effort was ruled out for offside.
Payne increased the lead in the 63rd minute after Okpe dribbled past two Comoros defenders before squaring the ball for the midfielder to finish.
Three minutes later, Kanu completed her brace with another header from an Ijamilusi cross to make it 4-0, further underlining Nigeria’s superiority.
Okpe won a penalty in the 71st minute after being fouled inside the box, and Ucheibe converted from the spot to complete the scoring.
Nigeria will now turn their attention to Morocco, who stand between them and a place in the fourth round of the qualifying campaign.
The African qualifying series consists of five rounds, with only two teams earning places in the women’s football tournament at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
The Super Falcons returned to the Olympics at Paris 2024 after a 16-year absence and are seeking consecutive appearances at the Games.
