Eredivisie leaders-in-waiting PSV Eindhoven suffered a shocking setback as promoted side Telstar completed a remarkable league double over the Dutch giants with a 3–1 victory, deepening the sting of a frustrating weekend for the title chasers.
The result came shortly after the 1–1 draw between Feyenoord and Ajax, which meant PSV could not seal the Eredivisie title in round 28, even with victory in what was seen as a potential stepping-stone fixture.
PSV manager Peter Bosz named Ricardo Pepi up front, just a day after the collapse of the striker’s reported €36m move to Fulham.
Pepi nearly struck first, only for a goal-line clearance from Danny Bakker to deny him after a sharp move involving Ismael Saibari.
The visitors’ task became even harder when Anass Salah-Eddine was shown a straight red card for an elbow on Gerald Alders, forcing PSV to play over an hour with ten men.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, PSV almost held firm until Telstar struck just before the break. Sem van Duijn’s free-kick delivery was met at the back post by Patrick Brouwer, who fired home to give the hosts a surprise half-time lead.
PSV responded quickly after the restart, equalising within 80 seconds when Kilian Sildillia headed in from an Ivan Perisic corner, marking the winger’s ninth assist of the season.
However, PSV failed to turn dominance into a lead as chances for Ryan Flamingo, Couhaib Driouech and Saibari went begging.
Telstar remained dangerous and restored their advantage through Sem van Duijn, who fired in from distance in the 66th minute.
The upset was sealed in the 74th minute when substitute Kay Tejan reacted quickest to a long throw-in, slotting past Kovar to make it 3–1.
Remarkably, all three Telstar scorers, Brouwer, Van Duijn and Tejan—are former players of amateur side Quick Boys, underlining a fairytale subplot to the night.
PSV pushed late on and briefly thought they had pulled one back through Saibari, but the effort was ruled out for offside.
The defeat marks another historic blow for the Eindhoven club, who have now lost twice this season to a newly promoted team for the first time in decades.
The result keeps PSV waiting for a title-clinching moment, with their next opportunity set for their home clash against FC Utrecht on April 4.
