NiMet forecasts three days of thunderstorms, dust haze across Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has warned Nigerians to expect varying weather conditions, including dust haze and thunderstorms, across the country from Friday to Sunday.

The agency disclosed this in its three-day weather outlook released in Abuja on Thursday.

According to NiMet, slight dust haze is expected across most parts of the North, while moderate haze is likely in Kano, Jigawa, Bauchi and Kaduna states.

It also forecasts isolated thunderstorms accompanied by light rainfall in parts of Taraba State on Friday afternoon or evening.

For the North-Central region, the agency predicted sunny conditions with patches of clouds, with possible thunderstorms and light rain in parts of Kogi, Kwara, the Federal Capital Territory and Benue State later in the day.

NiMet said the southern region would experience cloudy skies, with light rainfall expected in parts of Delta and Bayelsa states on Friday morning.

It added that thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall were likely across parts of Ondo, Ogun, Osun and Ekiti states, as well as other parts of the South-East and South-South regions, later on Friday.

For Saturday, the agency forecast sunny and hazy weather across the North throughout the day, while the North-Central region would experience sunny conditions with occasional cloud cover.

It added that parts of the South-West and South-South regions could experience light rainfall later in the day.

NiMet urged Nigerians, particularly people living with asthma and other respiratory conditions, to take precautions against suspended dust particles.

The agency also warned that strong winds could occur before thunderstorms, advising residents to secure loose objects that could be blown away.

It further cautioned the public against sheltering under tall trees during thunderstorms because of the danger of falling branches and broken trees.

The agency advised residents to disconnect electrical appliances from power sources during thunderstorms to prevent possible damage and electrical hazards.

It also urged airline operators to obtain location-specific weather reports from NiMet to support safe flight planning.

Residents were encouraged to stay updated on changing weather conditions through the agency’s official website.
