Musk donates $276m to US Republicans ahead midterm elections

Tech billionaire, Elon Musk, has donated $276m to organisations supporting Republican candidates ahead of the November 3 midterm elections in the United States, according to a report by the New York Times.

The report, published on Monday, said the contributions were made between July and the latest reporting period, making Musk the largest individual donor in the current election cycle.

His total political spending for the cycle has now reached $366m.

The Republican-aligned Senate Leadership Fund received the largest share of the donations, with $158m allocated to support efforts to retain the party’s control of the Senate, where Republicans hold a narrow majority.

Musk, who owns Tesla and SpaceX, has previously made substantial contributions to US election campaigns.

In 2024, he donated $290m to support President Donald Trump’s successful re-election bid.

Following Trump’s return to office, Musk was given a role in the White House, where he oversaw the Department of Government Efficiency, an initiative established to reduce government spending.

However, he later left the position after a public disagreement with the president.

The two have since reconciled, with Trump presenting Musk with the National Medal of Science at an event in Washington, DC, last week.

Although individual campaign contributions in the US are capped at $3,300 per person, political action committees, known as PACs, provide a route through which wealthy donors can channel substantially larger sums to support candidates.

According to the New York Times, Musk donated $76m to his America PAC over the summer.

Other beneficiaries of his political spending included the Republican Congressional Leadership Fund, which received $20m, while the Republican Governors Association and the Lone Star Liberty PAC each received $10m.

The Republican Attorneys General Association also received $2m from the billionaire, the report said.
