American Grammy-winning singer and dancer Ciara Wilson has officially become a citizen of Benin Republic after tracing her ancestry to the West African nation.
The global superstar, widely known as Ciara, arrived in Benin earlier this week and was warmly received by government officials and locals before participating in a historic citizenship ceremony on Saturday, July 26.

During the ceremony in Cotonou, Benin’s Minister of Justice and Legislation, Babalola Jean-Michel H. Abimbola, emphasized the significance of the event, stating: “Ciara represents the living link between Africa and the diaspora. Granting her citizenship celebrates our shared history and inspires the next generation.”
Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Arts, Olushegun Adjadi Bakari, also present at the event, highlighted the cultural importance of Ciara’s journey, saying: “Culture and identity matter. Ciara’s visit brings awareness to Benin’s heritage and strengthens our global connections.”
Before the citizenship ceremony, Ciara visited Ouidah, a historic city central to the transatlantic slave trade. She walked the solemn Slave Route and paused at the emotional Gate of No Return, a memorial to enslaved Africans forced onto ships during the colonial era.
Her trip also included immersive cultural experiences, with videos circulating online showing her chanting in a local Beninese language, sparking excitement among fans across Africa, particularly in Nigeria and South Africa.
Ciara’s decision to seek Beninese citizenship followed years of ancestral research, which revealed strong familial ties to the country. Her visit was described as a homecoming, marked by receptions with traditional leaders and community members in Cotonou.
The singer’s move aligns with a growing trend of diaspora Africans reconnecting with their roots through citizenship initiatives, tourism, and cultural exchanges. Benin Republic has actively engaged in such programs to foster ties with descendants of enslaved Africans.
