Benin Republic head coach, Gernot Rohr, has made it clear that his team arrived in Uyo with the firm intention of claiming all three points against the Super Eagles.
Rohr, who is no stranger to Nigerian football, previously managed the Super Eagles from 2016 to 2021, leading them to the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
Now 72, the German tactician is on the brink of guiding Benin Republic to the same global stage.
The Cheetahs are set to face Nigeria in a crucial matchday 10 World Cup qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, on Tuesday (today).
“I have a lot of friends in Nigeria, even in this team. Some of the players here are ones I brought into the squad,” Rohr told reporters during a media briefing.
“But this is not a moment for emotions or memories. The focus is on a big match, and we’ll all be there to witness it.”
Reflecting on his past achievements with Nigeria, Rohr described the upcoming clash as a decisive test for his current side.
“The game against Nigeria is like a final for us, and we have a good chance to reach the World Cup,” he said.
“The memories from my time in Nigeria are wonderful, especially qualifying for the 2018 World Cup with two games to spare, but that is in the past. This is a new challenge, and I’m focused on doing it with my Benin team.”
