Police neutralise two suspected kidnappers, recover N2.2m in Ogun

Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command have killed two suspected kidnappers and recovered N2.2 million believed to be ransom proceeds during an operation targeting a criminal gang linked to a recent abduction in the state.

The operation, conducted by the command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit, followed the successful rescue of a victim who was kidnapped on June 11, 2026, in Ogbe Village, Ogun State.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the command immediately deployed intelligence and tactical resources after receiving a report of the abduction.

According to him, sustained surveillance, intelligence gathering and operational pressure forced the kidnappers to release the victim unharmed on June 18.

Following the rescue, security operatives intensified efforts to track down members of the gang.

“Acting on credible intelligence, the operatives successfully traced members of the gang to their hideout within the state,” Babaseyi said.

He explained that the suspects resisted arrest when they sighted the police team.

“On sighting the operatives, the suspects opened fire in a desperate attempt to resist arrest and escape.

“The operatives responded professionally, leading to a gun duel during which two of the suspected kidnappers were neutralised, while other members of the gang fled the scene with gunshot injuries,” he stated.

The police spokesperson disclosed that several items were recovered during the operation.

“A search conducted on one of the neutralised suspects led to the recovery of a single-barrel gun, while further examination of the scene yielded one expended cartridge, a mobile phone, and a cash sum of Two Million, Two Hundred Thousand Naira (₦2,200,000), reasonably suspected to be proceeds of criminal activities,” he added.

The command said investigations were ongoing to apprehend the fleeing gang members and uncover the full extent of the syndicate’s activities.
