The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a 30-year-old suspected cultist and recovered a locally made pistol and a live cartridge in Abeokuta, the state capital.
The suspect, identified as Idris Obarayi, was apprehended at a hideout in Ita Ogboni, Igbore, Abeokuta, at about 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday, October 20, following a report of suspected gunshots and screams in the Oke Ago-Owu area.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday.
According to the statement, operatives of the Special Weapons and Tactics Unit were deployed after receiving a distress call at about 2:30 a.m.
The police said the suspects fled upon sighting the operatives, who recovered the firearm and ammunition during the pursuit.
It added that subsequent tracking and investigative efforts led to Obarayi’s arrest later in the day.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect allegedly admitted to being a member of the Aiye confraternity and claimed ownership of the recovered firearm and ammunition,” the statement said.
The command noted that efforts were ongoing to arrest the fleeing suspects and determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, commended the SWAT operatives for their swift response and follow-up investigation.
Ojajuni reaffirmed the command’s commitment to proactive policing and the arrest of suspected criminals, urging residents to provide credible information to assist security agencies.
He also advised residents to continue their lawful activities and report suspicious incidents through appropriate police channels.
The commissioner assured the public that the command would sustain its operations to protect lives and property across the state.
