President Bola Tinubu has ordered the suspension of emergency rule earlier declared in Rivers State, citing the need to restore democratic order and encourage dialogue among political stakeholders in the oil-rich state.
The President made this known in a statement personally signed on Wednesday, September 17, 2025.
“After reviewing the current situation in Rivers State and ongoing engagements with stakeholders, I have directed the immediate suspension of emergency rule in the state,” Tinubu said.
“The Federal Government remains committed to peace, stability, and the strengthening of democratic institutions across Nigeria.”
The emergency rule had sparked nationwide debates when it was first imposed, with critics warning it could heighten political tensions in the state.
Reacting to the development, political observers said the President’s decision could open a new chapter for reconciliation.
“This suspension gives Rivers a chance to breathe politically,” one analyst noted. “However, much will depend on how both the Federal Government and state leaders handle the fragile peace process.”
Meanwhile, the President assured that security agencies would continue to maintain law and order in the state while governance is fully restored.
“The people of Rivers State deserve peace and the freedom to exercise their democratic rights without fear. My administration will not relent in ensuring this,” Tinubu added.
