The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has called on the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Simeon Amadi, to comply with a subsisting court order halting actions connected to the impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu.
The party made the appeal on Saturday in Port Harcourt through its Publicity Secretary, Darlington Nwauju, following fresh steps by the Rivers State House of Assembly to commence impeachment proceedings.
On Friday, the Speaker of the Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, had directed the Chief Judge to constitute a seven-member panel to investigate allegations of misconduct against the governor and his deputy, after lawmakers resolved to move forward with impeachment.
However, a Rivers State High Court sitting in Oyibo Local Government Area, presided over by Justice F. A. Fiberesima, issued an interim injunction restraining the Speaker, the Clerk of the Assembly and other lawmakers from transmitting any impeachment-related communication to the Chief Judge.
The court also barred Justice Amadi from receiving or acting on any such request or resolution for a period of seven days, pending further hearing scheduled for January 23, 2026.
Reacting to the development, Nwauju said the lawmakers’ action amounted to a political miscalculation that could damage the party’s standing in the state.
“This is a needless legislative overreach that threatens the stability and future of our party in Rivers State,” he said.
He added that while the Constitution empowers the legislature to carry out impeachment, the process must be exercised with restraint and within the bounds of the law.
“No matter how the allegations are framed, they remain subjective in the court of public opinion. What we are witnessing is not only unhealthy for governance but also embarrassing for the APC,” Nwauju stated.
The APC spokesman, who spoke with the backing of former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, described the situation as a “legislative coup” and urged the national leadership of the party to intervene.
“We call on the Honourable Chief Judge of Rivers State to respect the interim injunction and refrain from acting on any resolution of the House,” he said.
He further appealed to the party’s National Working Committee to activate internal conflict-resolution mechanisms “to save our party from avoidable humiliation.”
The impeachment moves have deepened political tension in Rivers State, as divisions within the ruling party continue to play out in the state legislature.
