The Rivers State Police Command has launched a comprehensive investigation following a violent attack on a traditional ruler in Khana Local Government Area, where gunmen reportedly opened fire on his vehicle, leaving him injured.
The incident occurred on Sunday, January 25, 2026, around 5:30 p.m., as the Paramount Ruler of Bangha Community, His Royal Majesty, King T.Y. Baridam, was returning from a meeting in the neighbouring Okwale Community.
According to the monarch’s report to police, his convoy was ambushed along Tekar Sogho Road, a route leading to the East–West Road in Khana LGA. Armed men, reportedly lying in wait in nearby bushes, emerged and opened fire on his black Toyota Prado.
The attack caused significant damage to the vehicle, with bullets shattering the windscreen and other parts of the car. King Baridam sustained a gunshot wound to his thigh during the assault.
He was immediately rushed to a medical facility and is currently receiving treatment. Police confirmed he is responding to care, though further details about his condition have not been disclosed.
In response, the Rivers State Police Command deployed patrol teams to comb surrounding communities and forested routes to track down the attackers.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, CSP Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident in a press statement on Monday, noting that investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.
“The Rivers State Police Command assures the public that no stone will be left unturned in bringing the perpetrators to justice,” the statement read.
Police also urged residents of Khana and neighbouring communities to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing any information that could aid the investigation.
The attack has intensified security concerns in the area, particularly given the victim’s status as a traditional ruler, and comes amid ongoing efforts by security agencies to curb violent crimes and attacks on public figures in Rivers State. Authorities have promised to provide updates as investigations progress.
