EPL: Solanke rescues point for 10-man Tottenham against Man Utd

Tottenham Hotspur striker, Dominic Solanke, scored a stoppage-time equaliser to earn his side a 1-1 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday, increasing the pressure on United manager Michael Carrick.

Despite playing with 10 men after Rodrigo Bentancur was sent off, Tottenham found a late response to deny United victory in the Premier League encounter.

Manchester United took the lead in the 73rd minute when Bryan Mbeumo fired into the far corner after receiving a pass from Matheus Cunha. Tottenham’s hopes of recovering suffered another setback when Bentancur received a straight red card for headbutting Luke Shaw following a heated exchange.

However, United failed to capitalise on their numerical advantage, allowing Solanke to rescue a point for the visitors.

The striker rose to meet Sandro Tonali’s cross, getting ahead of Lisandro Martinez to head home in the closing stages.

Tottenham had created several opportunities before conceding, with Solanke, Mohammed Kudus and Destiny Udogie all missing chances during a dominant spell.

United goalkeeper, Senne Lammens denied Solanke earlier in the game, while Kudus fired wide after a promising attacking move.

The draw ended Tottenham’s wait for an away goal that had lasted since May and lifted them to 18th place, although they remained in the relegation zone on goals scored.

Roberto De Zerbi’s side had struggled for goals following a difficult start to the campaign despite a £300m investment in rebuilding the squad.

For United, the result extended their disappointing start to the season, leaving them with six points from their opening six league matches.

The club have not recorded a worse points tally at this stage since the 1986/87 campaign.

Carrick acknowledged that his team needed to improve their ability to protect a lead, saying they had made the situation more difficult for themselves by failing to see out the match.

United sit 12th in the standings, only three points ahead of Tottenham, as pressure continues to mount on Carrick.
