The hosts maintained their dominance after the break, defending resolutely to prevent the visitors from mounting a comeback and securing all three points.

The victory came days after Liverpool produced an impressive 4-3 comeback win over Villarreal in the Champions League.

Alexis Mac Allister scored twice in that encounter, while Ronald Araujo and Wirtz also found the net.

Teenage winger Rio Ngumoha contributed two assists.

Liverpool had also defeated Brentford 2-1 in their previous Premier League fixture, with Isak scoring his fifth league goal of the season.

Brighton, meanwhile, struggled to reproduce the form that saw them thrash rivals Crystal Palace 5-0 in their previous league outing.

They had also played out a goalless draw against Jablonec in the UEFA Conference League on Thursday.

Fabian Hürzeler’s side had hoped to secure a positive result at Anfield to remain within touching distance of Manchester City and Arsenal in the league standings, but Liverpool’s early goals proved decisive.
