EPL: Watkins fires Aston Villa to 2-1 win over Chelsea

Aston Villa kept their unlikely Premier League title ambitions alive with a dramatic comeback victory over Chelsea, as substitute Ollie Watkins inspired a 2-1 win at Stamford Bridge ahead of a crucial clash with Arsenal.

Chelsea appeared in control for much of the contest, dominating a lively festive encounter between two sides chasing Champions League qualification.

The hosts were rewarded in the 37th minute when Reece James delivered a teasing corner from the left, forcing chaos in the six-yard box before the ball deflected off Joao Pedro and over the line under pressure from Emiliano Martínez.

Before the breakthrough, Enzo Fernández had already curled narrowly wide, while Martínez reacted smartly to deny Joao Pedro’s flicked effort as Chelsea pushed for an opener.

The Blues carried that momentum into the second half, with John McGinn fortunate not to divert Cole Palmer’s cross into his own net.
However, the game turned decisively following Unai Emery’s triple change just before the hour mark. One of those introductions, Watkins, immediately injected urgency into Villa’s attack.

After seeing an earlier effort from Boubacar Kamara smothered by Robert Sánchez, the England striker restored parity in the 63rd minute, his initial shot blocked, only for the rebound to ricochet back off him and creep into the net.

Watkins then completed the turnaround in emphatic fashion six minutes from time. Rising above his marker, he powered a precise header from Youri Tielemans’ corner into the bottom-left corner, sealing a memorable victory for the visitors.

The contest was a textbook example of two contrasting halves. Chelsea dominated the opening period, registering 10 shots, amassing 1.98 expected goals, and recording 28 touches in Villa’s penalty area, while Villa failed to muster a single attempt.

After the break, the momentum shifted completely, with Villa outshooting Chelsea 11-4 and producing a superior xG of 1.05 to 0.16.

Watkins’ brace also placed him in rare company. He became only the second substitute this season to score twice away at Chelsea in the Premier League, following Brighton’s Danny Welbeck — a feat that had occurred just once in the previous three decades.

The result further underlined Villa’s remarkable turnaround. After five matchdays, Emery’s side sat 18th without a league win.

Since then, they have surged to 11 consecutive victories, equalling a club record set in 1914 and have collected more wins (12) and points (36) than any other team during that spell.

Villa now move to within three points of league leaders Arsenal, setting the stage for a mouthwatering showdown on Tuesday.
