Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw by Leeds United at Elland Road on Sunday, extending their disappointing Premier League run and increasing pressure on manager Michael Carrick.
United took the lead through Bryan Mbeumo in the first half, but Dominic Calvert-Lewin restored parity for Leeds as the hosts fought back to earn a point.
The result means United have recorded just one Premier League victory in their last seven matches and remain without a league win since August, raising further questions about Carrick’s position at the club.
Coming into the encounter after a defeat to Atletico Madrid and a week of controversy surrounding defender Lisandro Martinez’s explosive interview, United needed a positive result to ease the growing tension around the team.
Carrick made tactical adjustments, deploying a different formation that offered greater attacking flexibility.
United also played without a recognised striker for much of the contest, allowing Youri Tielemans to take on a more advanced role.
The approach paid off in the first half when Tielemans combined with Mbeumo, who finished the move to give the visitors the advantage.
United appeared more organised and purposeful than in their previous league outing, a goalless draw against Tottenham Hotspur.
However, they struggled to maintain their intensity as the match progressed.
Leeds gradually grew into the contest and eventually found an equaliser through Calvert-Lewin, who reacted instinctively to convert from a corner that United failed to defend properly.
The goal exposed another weakness in United’s performance, as the visitors struggled to cope with Leeds’ increasing pressure during the latter stages.
Despite showing greater determination and improved organisation, United were unable to find a second goal to secure all three points.
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher acknowledged United’s efforts, describing their performance at Elland Road as a decent result when considered in isolation, given the difficult circumstances surrounding the team.
Nevertheless, the draw does little to ease the pressure on Carrick, whose side continue to struggle for consistency in the Premier League.
For Leeds, the result represents a valuable point against one of English football’s biggest clubs, while United will be disappointed that an encouraging first-half display failed to produce a much-needed victory.
