Bundesliga: Bayern drop points after Hamburg draw

Bayern Munich dropped more points at the top of the Bundesliga after being held to a 2-2 draw by Hamburg at the Volksparkstadion.

Fabio Vieira put the hosts ahead from the penalty spot in the 34th minute, but Harry Kane quickly restored parity for Bayern just before half-time with his 22nd league goal of the season.

Luis Díaz, introduced at the start of the second half, gave Bayern the lead immediately, only for Luka Vuskovic’s towering header to secure a deserved draw for the relegation-threatened side.

Hamburg started the match brightly, with Vuskovic nearly opening the scoring from a corner early on. Bayern, recovering from last weekend’s shock 2-1 home defeat to Augsburg, their first Bundesliga loss in 27 matches, gradually found their rhythm, with Serge Gnabry firing over from distance.

Hamburg goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes was alert to deny chances from both Michael Olise and Lennart Karl, while Manuel Neuer kept his side in the game with a fine save from Nicolás Capaldo.

The hosts earned their penalty in the 32nd minute when Joshua Kimmich caught Nicolai Remberg while challenging for a 50-50 ball.

Vieira calmly converted, sending Neuer the wrong way. Bayern responded swiftly, with Gnabry’s run down the left channel leading to Kane’s finish in the 42nd minute.

Moments later, Gnabry thought he had put Bayern ahead, but Kane’s offside position in the build-up ruled the goal out.

The second half saw Díaz replace Karl and make an instant impact, finishing neatly in the 46th minute after Olise’s precise pass.

But Hamburg struck back in the 53rd minute: a sweeping diagonal ball found William Mikelbrencis, whose looping cross was met by Vuskovic’s header.

Bayern came close again in the 65th minute when a deflected corner hit the crossbar, and later, Hamburg nearly snatched a late winner when Rayan Philippe’s ball found Vieira, only for Alphonso Davies to clear off the line.

Jamal Musiala had a shot tipped over, and a late Bayern penalty appeal for handball by Daniel Elfadli was overturned after a VAR review.

The result leaves Bayern with dropped points once more, while Hamburg earned a valuable point as they continue to battle near the relegation play-off zone.
