Bundesliga: Werder Bremen draw Paderborn 2-2

Werder Bremen recovered from a two-goal deficit to secure a 2-2 draw against Paderborn in their Bundesliga encounter at the Weserstadion on Saturday.

Paderborn appeared on course for victory after Stefano Marino and Steffen Tigges scored in the first half, but Niclas Füllkrug struck twice after the break to rescue a point for the hosts.

The visitors made a strong start and took the lead in the 18th minute when Marino finished a swift counterattack after being set up by Tigges.

Paderborn doubled their advantage 12 minutes later, with Tigges finding the net following a throw-in situation that caught Bremen’s defence off guard.

Despite enjoying more possession and creating several opportunities, Bremen struggled to make their dominance count before the interval, allowing Paderborn to head into half-time with a comfortable two-goal cushion.

However, the home side returned with renewed determination and quickly shifted the momentum in their favour.

Füllkrug reduced the deficit in the 59th minute, finishing a well-worked move involving Youri Regeer and Eren Dinkçi to give Bremen hope of mounting a comeback.

The striker completed his brace just six minutes later after Paderborn captain Laurin Curda conceded a penalty.

Füllkrug stepped up and converted from the spot to bring the hosts level at 2-2.

Bremen continued to press for a winner, but Paderborn goalkeeper Nahuel Noll produced a series of impressive saves to deny the home side and preserve a share of the points.

The hosts finished the contest with 18 shots, including 11 on target, compared with Paderborn’s 11 attempts and four efforts on target.

Bremen also enjoyed 61 per cent possession and created more clear-cut opportunities.

Nevertheless, Paderborn’s defensive resilience and Noll’s outstanding performance proved crucial in preventing the hosts from completing the comeback with a victory.

Noll was particularly impressive, making nine saves, including six from attempts inside the penalty area.

His composure under sustained pressure helped Paderborn withstand Bremen’s second-half onslaught.

Füllkrug was Bremen’s standout attacking performer, scoring both goals and registering five shots on target.

Dinkçi also played an important role in the comeback, providing the assist for the opening goal.

For Paderborn, Tigges made a decisive contribution with a goal and an assist, helping the visitors establish their early advantage.

Despite their impressive second-half response, Bremen could not find a third goal, while Paderborn held firm to claim a valuable away point.

The result reflected two contrasting performances: Paderborn’s clinical finishing in the first half and Bremen’s attacking dominance after the break.
