Bundesliga: Union Berlin hold Dortmund to goalless draw

Borussia Dortmund extended their winless run to three competitive matches after playing out a goalless draw against Union Berlin in the Bundesliga on Saturday.

The result followed a 2-2 draw against Werder Bremen and a 1-0 defeat to Norwegian side Bodø/Glimt in the UEFA Champions League, leaving Dortmund still searching for a return to winning ways.

Despite their struggles in front of goal, Dortmund had some encouraging performances, with Germany international Waldemar Anton emerging as one of the standout players at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei.

Anton delivered an impressive defensive display, winning duels, disrupting Union Berlin’s attacks and helping his side build pressure going forward.

His contribution earned him one of the highest ratings among Dortmund’s players.

Defender Nico Schlotterbeck also impressed with his physical presence and forward runs, while goalkeeper Gregor Kobel made an important save shortly before half-time to keep the hosts at bay.

However, Dortmund lacked the attacking quality needed to secure all three points, with Ethan Nwaneri and Maximilian Beier struggling to make a significant impact.

Nwaneri had a difficult afternoon, losing possession on several occasions and failing to convert promising opportunities.

The Arsenal loanee came close to scoring before the interval but could not make proper contact with his effort from a central position.

Beier also failed to capitalise on his opportunities, including a chance early in the second half when he connected with Julian Ryerson’s cross.

He was substituted alongside Nwaneri after an hour as Dortmund sought greater attacking impetus.

Serhou Guirassy offered a physical presence up front and worked to bring his teammates into play, but clear-cut opportunities remained limited.

The striker saw one promising effort blocked before another attempt was comfortably saved by Union goalkeeper Frederik Rönnow late in the game.

Dortmund’s substitutes struggled to change the outcome.

Fabio Silva brought some energy after coming on, while Konstantinos Karetsas was forced off shortly after his introduction after suffering an ankle injury.

Despite Dortmund’s attempts to find a breakthrough, Union Berlin held firm to secure a point.

The result leaves Dortmund facing further questions about their attacking efficiency as they prepare for their next fixtures.

They will turn their attention to the Champions League, where they are scheduled to face Sabah on October 20, before returning to Bundesliga action against Augsburg on October 24.
