Bundesliga: Union Berlin end Bayern Munich winning run after 2-2 draw

Bayern Munich’s flawless start to the season came to a halt as they were held to an enthralling 2-2 draw by Union Berlin at the Stadion an der Alten Försterei, though Harry Kane’s late header ensured the reigning champions at least salvaged a point.

The Bavarians arrived in the German capital looking to extend their perfect Bundesliga run, having won all nine matches so far, and carrying an unbeaten streak of 16 victories across all competitions in 2025/26.

Historically, Bayern had never lost to Union Berlin, boasting eight wins and four draws from their previous 12 encounters.

Union, meanwhile, had struggled in recent weeks, going winless in their last two league games and scoring in only one of their previous five.

Union Berlin began with confidence, showing no fear against the league leaders. They thought they had broken the deadlock in the 10th minute when birthday boy Ilyas Ansah headed in, but the goal was chalked off for a marginal offside.

The hosts’ persistence paid off in the 27th minute when Danilho Doekhi rose to meet a corner, firing past Manuel Neuer to give Union a deserved lead.

Bayern, under pressure, found a response through individual brilliance. Luis Díaz chased down an overhit pass from Josip Stanišić and, from a seemingly impossible angle, sent the ball soaring over Frederik Rønnow into the far corner to level the score.

The second half saw Union Berlin continue to challenge Bayern despite the visitors controlling possession.

Bayern coach Vincent Kompany made a tactical change just before the hour, replacing Serge Gnabry, who was making his 300th appearance for the club, with Lennart Karl.

Union remained dangerous on the break and from set-pieces, with Janik Haberer narrowly missing a chance following Rani Khedira’s setup.

Bayern’s best opportunity came from Michael Olise, whose low drive forced a sharp save from Rønnow.

In a dramatic twist, Doekhi struck again late in the match, heading home from another corner to put Union ahead, sending the home crowd into euphoria. However, Bayern refused to concede defeat.

With minutes remaining, Tom Bischof delivered a precise cross for Harry Kane, whose towering header restored parity and denied Union a historic win.

Doekhi’s performance stood out as a highlight, with the Dutch defender scoring both of Union’s goals and remaining defensively solid throughout, frustrating Bayern’s usually lethal attack.

His efforts earned him the highest Fantasy Manager points of the match, a remarkable 422, nearly twice that of any Bayern player.
