WAFCON: S’Falcons’ Oshoala apologises, urges support after Malawi defeat

Super Falcons forward, Asisat Oshoala, has appealed for patience and support from Nigerians following the team’s disappointing start to the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after a surprise defeat to Malawi.

The reigning African champions suffered a 3-2 loss to the Scorchers in their Group C opener at the Al Madina Stadium in Rabat on Tuesday night, leaving their title defence on shaky ground.

Malawi delivered an impressive performance to stun Nigeria, with Temwa Chawinga netting a brace while captain Tabitha Chawinga added the other goal.

The Super Falcons responded through captain Rasheedat Ajibade, who converted from the penalty spot, and substitute Uchenna Kanu, but their efforts were not enough to avoid defeat.

Speaking after the match, Oshoala expressed disappointment over the result and apologised to Nigerians, admitting the team failed to meet expectations.

“Smaller nations are closing the gap, but it’s also a wake-up call for Nigeria. We have to understand that other teams want to win this trophy as well,” Oshoala told reporters after the game.

“It’s still a long competition, and all we need to do is prepare well for the next game.

“We are sorry for losing the opening game to Malawi.”

The former African Women’s Player of the Year also urged Nigerians to continue backing the team as they prepare for a crucial Group C encounter against Zambia’s Copper Queens.

“We need the support of all Nigerians right now. A World Cup ticket is at stake, to be honest. This is the time we really need everyone to support the Super Falcons,” Oshoala added.
