WAFCON: Alloy Agu hails Super Falcons’ resilience in Botswana win

Former Nigerian international, Alloy Agu, has attributed the Super Falcons’ hard-fought victory over Botswana to the team’s resilience and fighting spirit at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

In a dramatic Group B clash played in Casablanca, Morocco, Nigeria secured a late 1-0 win thanks to Chinwendu Ihezuo’s 89th-minute strike.

The narrow victory earned the nine-time African champions a spot in the quarterfinals and saw them leap to the top of the group with six points, ahead of Algeria, who sit second with four points.

Despite the win, Agu voiced concern over the team’s wastefulness in front of goal, urging the players to be more clinical as the competition intensifies.

Speaking in a chat with Completesports.com, the former Super Eagles goalkeeper commended the team’s fighting spirit but emphasized the need for improvement in their finishing.

“Congratulations to the Super Falcons for booking a quarter-final berth in the ongoing 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. I also praised the players for their doggedness against a Botswana side that frustrated the Super Falcons for most of the game,” Agu said.

“However, the team must learn to convert their goal-scoring chances because they should have scored more goals against Botswana. This is one area I think the coach must look into as the tournament progresses.”

“I wish the players all the best in their remaining matches at the tournament.”

The Super Falcons will now shift their focus to the quarterfinals, where tougher challenges await in their quest for a record-extending 10th WAFCON title.
