US warns Nigerians on AI-edited passport photos for visa applications

The United States Mission in Nigeria has cautioned Nigerians applying for US visas against submitting passport photographs that have been altered with artificial intelligence or other digital editing tools, warning that such images will not be accepted.

In an advisory issued on its official X account, the mission stressed that passport photographs must be recent, unedited, and accurately reflect the applicant’s current appearance.

According to the mission, the use of digitally enhanced or filtered images could lead to delays in the visa application process.

“Do not use AI or digital editing tools on your passport photo. We will not accept photos that are edited or filtered,” the mission stated.

It further explained that passport photographs should have been taken within the last six months and should clearly resemble the applicant.

“Your photo should be recent, taken within the past six months, and look like you. The TSA or CBP officer must be able to recognise you. Submitting a digitally enhanced photo will significantly delay your application,” the statement added.

The advisory was accompanied by an information flier reiterating that the US Department of State does not accept edited or filtered passport photographs for visa processing.

The mission also encouraged applicants to review the official passport photo requirements on the US Department of State’s website before submitting their applications.

The warning comes as US authorities continue to strengthen measures against the use of AI-manipulated images in official documentation, with border security agencies relying on authentic, high-quality photographs for facial recognition and identity verification during travel.
