The West African Examinations Council has appointed Suleiman Kum, a 56-year-old senior official of the council, as the new Head of its Nigeria National Office.
Kum takes over from Dr Amos Dangut, whose three-year tenure ended on October 1, 2026. Dangut has now assumed the position of Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of WAEC.
The appointment was announced in a statement issued on Sunday by the Head of Public Affairs, WAEC Nigeria, Moyosola Adesina.
According to the council, Kum joined WAEC on July 17, 1998, as Assistant Registrar II and has since occupied several senior positions within the organisation.
The statement described him as “a seasoned test developer, administrator and executive” with extensive experience in examination administration, security, test development and branch management.
Kum was previously the Senior Deputy Registrar in charge of Test Administration and had also served as Deputy Registrar in the Head Office.
WAEC said he had contributed to several technological and administrative improvements within the council, including the introduction of variable data printing and enhanced security codes in examination materials.
He also played a role in replacing the council-wide attendance system with facial-recognition biometric technology and overseeing the delivery of Achievement Tests through computer-based examinations.
The council further disclosed that Kum was instrumental in establishing its Gusau office as a custodial centre.
His previous postings included roles as Head of Examinations Security in Awka, Yola and Makurdi, Branch Controller in Gusau and Kano, as well as Deputy Registrar and Zonal Coordinator in Port Harcourt and Ikeja.
He also served as Director of Administration and Head of the Security Printing Department.
WAEC stated that his career had been marked by “integrity, diligence, innovation and a strong commitment to service,” adding that his contributions had earned him several commendations and awards.
Kum, who is from Plateau State, holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Education from the National Open University of Nigeria and is currently pursuing a Master of Education in Educational Administration and Planning at the institution.
His appointment places him at the helm of WAEC’s Nigeria National Office as the council continues to oversee examinations and related assessment activities across the country.
