Nigeria has no active Ebola cases after patient’s evacuation — WHO

The World Health Organisation says Nigeria currently has no active Ebola cases following the evacuation of an infected patient and her husband to Switzerland.

WHO Regional Director for Africa, Professor Mohamed Janabi, announced this on Monday in a post on X, confirming that the two Swiss nationals were airlifted out of Nigeria earlier in the day.

The patient was reportedly stabilised by Nigerian medical personnel after receiving treatment during the acute phase of the illness.

Janabi commended the Nigerian health authorities and other emergency response partners for their efforts in managing the case.

“The Nigerian medical team successfully managed her through the acute phase of the illness and stabilised her condition,” he said.

He also praised the Federal Government, healthcare workers, clinicians and emergency responders for their contributions to containing the situation.

“On behalf of WHO and all partners, I warmly congratulate the Government of Nigeria, health workers, clinicians, emergency responders and all those involved in the response,” Janabi stated.

He described the response as evidence of Africa’s capacity to manage public health emergencies through collaboration and professional expertise.

Despite the evacuation, the WHO official stressed that surveillance and contact tracing must continue to prevent further transmission.

According to him, Nigerian authorities will continue monitoring 52 contacts, while Switzerland will oversee the patient’s continued treatment and the monitoring of her husband, who is listed as contact number 53.

“With the evacuation of the patient and her husband, Nigeria currently has no Ebola cases,” Janabi said.

He further described the response as a demonstration of African expertise, resilience and leadership in public health.
