Serhou Guirassy struck twice as Borussia Dortmund cruised to a 4-0 victory over 10-man Villarreal in Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League clash, ending their winless run in all competitions dating back to October.
The 2024 Champions League finalists climbed to fourth in the group standings after five matches, inspired by Guirassy, who rediscovered his scoring touch.
Last season’s joint-top scorer in the competition had managed just one goal in his previous nine outings, but he broke the deadlock with a powerful header moments before halftime.
Villarreal’s night worsened early in the second half when captain Juan Foyth was dismissed following a VAR review that showed he blocked Karim Adeyemi’s goalbound effort with his arm.
Guirassy’s resulting penalty was initially saved by goalkeeper Luiz Junior, but the Guinean reacted quickest to convert the rebound and make it 2-0.
Adeyemi later added his own goal in unusual fashion, charging down a hurried clearance from former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey, with the ball ricocheting off his leg and into the net.
Fabio Silva rattled the crossbar from the spot late on, but Dortmund still found a fourth in stoppage time when Daniel Svensson’s header deflected in off Pascal Gross.
The heavy defeat compounded Villarreal’s struggles on the European stage this season. Despite sitting third in La Liga and just three points adrift of Real Madrid, they have collected only a single point from five Champions League fixtures.
