Portuguese side FC Porto handed Napoli a 4-1 defeat in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, with the Italian champions’ defensive lapses and a late red card contributing to their collapse at the Estadio do Dragao.
Porto, who had lost their opening three matches in the competition, bounced back in emphatic fashion against the Serie A side, with Jan Bednarek, Gabriel Veiga, Jakub Kiwior and Samu Aghehowa scoring for the hosts.
Bednarek opened the scoring in the 11th minute, rising unmarked to head home Gabriel Veiga’s corner as Napoli struggled to contain Porto’s threat from set pieces.
Napoli restored parity shortly before the break when Scott McTominay converted from close range in the 43rd minute after goalkeeper Diogo Costa had made two saves from Matteo Politano and Rasmus Hojlund during a frantic attacking sequence.
Porto regained the lead in the 71st minute, with Veiga finishing one-on-one against Alex Meret after Santiago Gimenez played him through on goal.
Kiwior extended the hosts’ advantage in the 80th minute, heading home another corner as Napoli’s defensive problems persisted.
The visitors’ misery worsened in the closing stages when Rafa Marin was sent off for bringing down Samu inside the box.
Samu converted the resulting penalty in the 90th minute to seal Porto’s 4-1 victory and secure their first Champions League win of the campaign.
