Italian club, Como have equalled Liverpool and Real Madrid’s record for the biggest winning margin in UEFA Champions League history after crushing Lens 9-1 in their Matchday 4 fixture on Tuesday night.
The victory gave Como an eight-goal winning margin, matching Liverpool’s 8-0 demolition of Beşiktaş in 2007 and Real Madrid’s 8-0 thrashing of Malmö in 2015.
According to the UEFA website on Wednesday, Como also became the second club after Bayern Munich to score nine goals in a single Champions League match.
The competition debutants further set a new record for the biggest away win in the tournament’s history.
Tasos Douvikas led the Italian side’s scoring with a hat-trick, while six other Como players contributed goals in the emphatic victory.
Liverpool previously set the record on November 6, 2007, when they defeated Beşiktaş 8-0 during the 2007/08 group stage.
Yossi Benayoun scored a hat-trick, while Ryan Babel and Peter Crouch each netted twice. Captain Steven Gerrard completed the rout with the eighth goal.
The Merseyside club achieved the feat despite having earned just one point from their opening three group matches.
Real Madrid equalled Liverpool’s record on December 8, 2015, with an 8-0 home victory over Malmö.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored four goals, setting an individual group-stage record of 11 goals at the time, while Karim Benzema completed a hat-trick.
Bayern Munich also hold a significant place in the competition’s record books after beating GNK Dinamo 9-2 on September 17, 2024.
The German giants set a record for the most goals scored by a team in a single Champions League match, with Harry Kane scoring four times and Michael Olise adding a brace.
