Scholes slams Carrick over Cunha’s role in Man Utd attack

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has criticised the club’s lack of attacking threat and questioned Matheus Cunha’s role in Michael Carrick’s side.

United have made an underwhelming start to the Premier League season, winning just one of their opening three matches.

Their latest outing ended in a 2-2 draw against Everton on Sunday after United twice surrendered the lead before settling for a point away from home.

While Carrick played down concerns over the team’s early-season form, Scholes believes the lack of urgency and a recognised centre-forward remains a major problem for the Red Devils.

Speaking on The Good, The Bad, and The Football, the former England midfielder said he was unimpressed by United’s performance at Everton.

“I felt it was really timid against Everton. There was no aggression and Everton were there for the taking. There was so much space and they never went for the throat.”

Scholes also questioned Carrick’s decision not to start Benjamin Sesko, arguing that United need a focal point in attack.

“The centre forward position is a bit of an issue because he is not playing Sesko.
“He is a focal point. It is very difficult to watch a Manchester United team without a centre forward.

The former midfielder was particularly critical of Cunha’s deployment, saying the Brazilian’s exact position in the team remains unclear.

“With Cunha, we don’t really know what he is, a No.10 or a wide player but he’s definitely not a No.9 and watching United without a No.9 is a struggle.”

Cunha has shown glimpses of his attacking quality, including providing two assists in United’s 5-2 victory over Ipswich Town.

However, Scholes believes the forward line has yet to develop the cohesion and threat required to consistently trouble opponents.

Carrick will now face pressure to find a more effective attacking formula as United look to improve their fortunes in the coming fixtures.
