Football legend, Ruud Gullit, has urged Manchester United to remain patient with head coach Michael Carrick amid growing pressure following the club’s run of five matches without a victory.
United’s latest setback was a 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, leaving Carrick facing increasing scrutiny as frustration mounts within the squad.
The situation has also been complicated by defender Lisandro Martinez’s criticism of the club’s management following the loss, with reports suggesting that several players share his concerns about how the club is being run.
United’s last victory came against Sabah at Old Trafford on September 10.
Speaking to ComeOn, Gullit said the club needed to give Carrick time to rebuild the team, insisting that the current squad lacked the quality of their Premier League rivals.
“The most important thing that Manchester United can show this season is patience. It’s a simple fact. They don’t have the best players in the Premier League anymore.
“They all play for the other teams at the moment. United are having to deal with the fact that the players they really need all play for the other clubs. They missed the boat about five or six years ago.
“The top players went to Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City, and United have missed the boat, and it will take some time for them to get themselves in order to get back to a level where they can have a chance at winning another Premier League title. There are too many stronger contenders with a lot more quality this season.”
Gullit’s comments come as Carrick attempts to steady the team after a difficult spell.
The former midfielder guided United back into the Champions League last season, but recent results have intensified questions about the club’s direction.
Carrick’s side are scheduled to face Leeds over the weekend before taking on Como in the Champions League a few days later.
The upcoming fixtures could prove crucial as the manager seeks to end the winless run and ease tensions within the dressing room.
