EPL: Neville urges Man Utd to sack Carrick

Former Manchester United captain, Gary Neville, has called on the club to sack head coach Michael Carrick, arguing that dismissing a manager can sometimes be in his best interest.

Carrick’s future has come under increasing scrutiny following United’s disappointing 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday, a result that left the club 16th in the Premier League table, just one point above the relegation zone.

Despite mounting pressure on the 45-year-old coach, United have opted to give him another opportunity to revive the team’s fortunes ahead of their trip to Chelsea on Saturday.

Neville, however, believes the club’s decision to retain Carrick could stem from poor planning, uncertainty and a lack of suitable replacements.

Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast on Thursday, the former defender suggested that United’s hierarchy had struggled to reach a clear decision following the Bournemouth defeat.

“I reckon what’s happened in the 24 hours after Bournemouth is that they’ve literally debated it back and forth,” Neville said.

“I don’t know this, but they’ve debated it to the point where they’ve got themselves into a muddle, and thought, ‘we’ll just stay with him’.”

Neville further argued that the club’s hesitation could reflect a lack of preparation and uncertainty over who could replace Carrick.
“Sometimes a manager needs sacking for their own good. I needed sacking at Valencia. I was happy that they put me out of my misery,” he said.

Carrick’s challenges have also been compounded by tensions involving captain Bruno Fernandes, who questioned the team’s tactics after their 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como last week.

Fernandes was left out of the starting line-up for the Bournemouth game, but he and Carrick have since held discussions to resolve their differences.

Neville suggested that the captain’s public criticism could be only a small indication of the frustrations being expressed privately within the dressing room.

“If Bruno Fernandes, the captain of the club, comes out and questions the manager’s tactics after a 4-1 defeat in Como, where he’s played like a drain, and he’s been playing like a drain for three months, and the rest of them have as well, that is only 1 or 2% of what they’re actually saying internally,” Neville said.

The former United captain also questioned the significance of supporters singing Carrick’s name after the Bournemouth defeat.

He described the coach’s response to the fans as “effectively a farewell lap”.

However, the mood shifted when Carrick left the pitch, with supporters booing the players as they made their way down the tunnel.

Carrick will now seek to improve United’s performances and results against Chelsea on Saturday as pressure continues to mount over his position and the club’s precarious standing in the Premier League.
