Manchester United defender, Lisandro Martínez, is facing a possible fine after criticising the club’s hierarchy over their transfer dealings following their 2-0 Champions League defeat to Atlético Madrid.
The Argentina international expressed dissatisfaction with the club’s failure to strengthen the squad sufficiently during the summer transfer window, specifically calling out technical director Jason Wilcox in an interview with Amazon Prime.
“We did a fantastic season last season and now we expect more from the top, more players to compete because many teams bring many players as well,” Martínez said.
“I expect more [investment]. 100%. I expect more from our technical director. Tonight it is easy to blame the coach, easy to say the players, but also we have to see other areas. You can’t keep changing, changing, changing the manager. What about other areas?”
Martínez reiterated his position in a subsequent interview, insisting that he would not “close my mouth” while calling for greater ambition from the club’s leadership.
According to The Athletic journalist Laurie Whitwell, the club considers a fine for the defender “inevitable”.
However, Martínez is reportedly not the only player in the dressing room concerned about United’s summer recruitment and the club’s overall direction.
Football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano also reported on X on Wednesday that the Argentine was not alone in his views about the club’s management.
“Lisandro Martínez, not the only player at Manchester United with that view of the situation at club level. Man United assessing possible sanction/fine for Licha, as reports. Out of contract in June 2027 but club option until 2028.”
The 28-year-old’s contract with United expires in June 2027, although the club can extend it by another year.
However, the prospect of him agreeing to a longer-term contract is now considered remote.
United will seek to return to winning ways when they face Leeds United in the Premier League on Sunday.
