Retired police officers give FG October 15 deadline to honour pension agreements

Retired police officers under the Contributory Pension Scheme have given the Federal Government until October 15, 2026, to fulfil agreements on gratuity payments and increases in monthly pensions.

The retirees warned that failure to meet the deadline would prompt them to stage a peaceful protest in Abuja on November 2.

The demand was contained in a statement signed by the National Coordinator of the association and Chairman of its Kaduna State chapter, Mannir Lawal, and circulated to journalists in Kaduna.

The association expressed disappointment over the failure of the Federal Government, the National Pension Commission (PENCOM) and the Inspector-General of Police to implement commitments reportedly made during negotiations with representatives of the retired officers.

According to the group, the authorities had assured them that the agreed measures would be implemented by the end of September 2026.

The association said the PENCOM Director-General had promised gratuity payments equivalent to 300 per cent of annual emoluments, alongside an increase in monthly pensions to 100 per cent of the applicable salary benchmark.

However, it lamented that the failure to implement the commitments had weakened confidence in the negotiation process and heightened concerns about the welfare of retired officers.

The retirees stressed that their years of service to the country should count in the efforts to address their pension concerns.

They said their contributions to protecting lives and property, maintaining law and order, and safeguarding national security should not be overlooked.

The association urged the Federal Government, PENCOM and the IGP to take concrete and verifiable steps to honour the agreements and provide a clear timeline for implementation.

It maintained that the planned demonstration would be peaceful, lawful and orderly, describing the action as a last resort after attempts to resolve the matter through dialogue.

The group also called on affected retired police officers nationwide to remain united and prepare to participate in the protest if the October 15 deadline passes without the implementation of the agreed measures.
