Police arrest Abia father for tying, beating 13-year-old son

The Abia State Police Command has arrested a man, identified as Uzoma Uwaeme, for allegedly stripping, tying and flogging his 13-year-old son in Aba.

The incident came to public attention after a video showing the teenager bound with ropes and apparently injured went viral on social media.

According to the police, the boy was allegedly left exposed to the scorching sun during the assault.

Following the circulation of the video, the Commissioner of Police in Abia State, CP Wilfred Afolabi, directed operatives of the Abayi Divisional Police Headquarters to identify and arrest the suspect at his residence on Nwokocha Street, off Udeabara Road, Aba.

The command’s spokesperson, DSP Maureen Chinaka, confirmed the arrest in a statement, saying the teenager had been rescued and taken for medical treatment.

Chinaka said, “The victim has received medical attention, is in stable condition, and is currently under the protective custody of the Police.”

She added that the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation, while the suspect remained in police custody.

The Commissioner of Police condemned the alleged assault, describing it as inhumane and barbaric, as well as a violation of the child’s rights.

The command said Afolabi had reaffirmed its zero tolerance for child abuse and domestic violence.

He also assured the public that the suspect would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The police urged members of the public to promptly report suspected cases of child abuse, domestic violence and other criminal activities to the nearest police station or through the command’s designated emergency lines.

The incident comes amid growing concerns over cases of physical abuse involving children, with law enforcement agencies and child protection advocates repeatedly calling for stronger enforcement of laws protecting minors.
