LASTMA announces temporary traffic closure for gas tanker recovery

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has advised motorists to anticipate traffic disruptions around the Chisco–Victoria Island axis, following efforts to recover a gas-laden tanker that overturned on Monday.

In a statement issued by the agency’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, LASTMA confirmed that its officials, alongside emergency responders, were currently working at the scene to safely remove the tanker.

According to the statement, the main carriageway may be temporarily shut to enable a coordinated recovery operation and avert additional accidents.

“The main carriageway will be closed to traffic at any time to allow for a safe and professional recovery of the fallen tanker,” Taofiq said.

“This measure is to prevent any secondary incident during the operation.”

The agency appealed for calm, urging drivers to follow diversion instructions issued by its operatives on the ground.

“Motorists are strongly advised to exercise patience and cooperate with LASTMA officials and other emergency responders,” the statement added.

“Efforts are ongoing to complete the evacuation as quickly as possible and restore normal traffic flow.”

LASTMA emphasised that safeguarding commuters remains a priority for the Lagos State Government, promising to provide updates as the situation progresses.

The warning comes against the backdrop of past tanker-related incidents, including an explosion in Niger State in October after residents attempted to scoop petrol from a fallen tanker, resulting in several deaths and injuries.
