Kuwait, Bahrain face fresh Iranian missile, drone attacks

Kuwait said on Saturday that Iran launched another attack on one of its electricity and water facilities, forcing several power generation units offline, barely 24 hours after a similar strike hit critical infrastructure in the country.

“Another electricity and water distillation plant was targeted by a hostile attack that led to a fire erupting in one of the plant’s components,” Kuwait’s ministry of electricity and water said in a statement.

The latest incident marks the second consecutive day that a power and water plant has come under attack. On Friday, another facility was struck, triggering a fire and causing significant damage.

Kuwait’s fire service said Iranian attacks on Saturday ignited fires at two separate locations, leaving several firefighters and one worker injured.

The escalating attacks also disrupted air travel, with Kuwait’s national airline announcing that most scheduled flights had been delayed or rescheduled after rocket and drone attacks prompted the temporary suspension of operations at Kuwait International Airport.

In neighbouring Bahrain, the military said its air defence systems intercepted and destroyed multiple Iranian aerial attacks. An AFP journalist in the capital, Manama, reported hearing explosions shortly after air-raid sirens were activated.

“Air defence systems thwarted” the strikes, the army said in a statement, adding that they “intercepted and destroyed a number of treacherous Iranian aerial assaults”.

Bahrain’s interior ministry said residents heard air-raid sirens sound five times since daybreak and urged the public to seek shelter.

Earlier, the Iranian military said it had launched attacks on a US-operated air base in Bahrain in retaliation for recent American strikes, according to Iran’s state broadcaster.

Drones targeted “aircraft shelters and parking areas, fuel storage tanks of the US military at Sheikh Isa Air Base, as well as several connecting bridges in Bahrain”, the Iranian army said.
