Inter beat Venezia 2-0 in Serie A on Wednesday, scoring twice in the closing stages through an own goal by Matías Moreno and a deflected header from Carlos Augusto to maintain their position as joint league leaders alongside Lazio.
Inter struggled to break down Venezia for much of the encounter at the Stadio Pier Luigi Penzo, but two goals in quick succession ultimately secured all three points for the visitors.
The victory followed a dramatic 2-1 win over Fiorentina at the weekend, when Inter also needed two goals in added time to complete their comeback.
Their latest triumph again highlighted their ability to grind out results despite an unconvincing performance.
Venezia created several promising opportunities and could have taken the lead before the break.
Inter goalkeeper Ivan Provedel produced important saves to deny Akor Adams and Lion Lauberbach, while another Venezia effort was ruled out for offside.
Inter also threatened through Marcus Thuram and Ange-Yoan Bonny but struggled to convert their chances.
Head coach Cristian Chivu responded by making three substitutions at half-time in an attempt to improve his team’s attacking performance.
Venezia continued to threaten after the restart and missed a golden opportunity in the 60th minute when Gianluca Busio fired over from close range.
The hosts later thought they had scored through Adams, but the goal was disallowed for offside after he went around Provedel.
Thuram came close to breaking the deadlock for Inter, first shooting narrowly wide before directing a header just beyond the far post.
However, the breakthrough eventually arrived in the 79th minute when Moreno inadvertently turned the ball into his own net while attempting to stop a cross from Thuram.
Inter doubled their advantage three minutes later when Augusto’s glancing header from Hakan Calhanoglu’s corner struck Venezia defender Redouane Halhal and deflected into the net.
The two late goals settled the contest, allowing Inter to leave Venice with a 2-0 victory despite Venezia’s missed opportunities and two disallowed goals.
The result kept the Nerazzurri alongside Lazio at the top of the Serie A standings.
