Grammy Award-winning Nigerian singer Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, popularly known as Wizkid, has sparked fresh controversy after publicly clashing with Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti over comparisons to the late music legend, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.
The exchange unfolded on Tuesday across social media platforms, with Wizkid reacting to comments and criticisms linked to the ongoing debate about his stature in relation to Fela.
In a series of Instagram posts, the singer dismissed Seun Kuti and claimed he had surpassed Fela in influence and relevance.
In one post, Wizkid wrote, “I big pass your papa. Wetin you wan do?” He repeated similar remarks in subsequent stories, asserting his dominance in the music industry.
The singer later took the feud to X (formerly Twitter), where he contrasted Fela’s legacy with Seun Kuti’s actions. Wizkid stated, “Fela fought for freedom. This one is fighting fanbases,” in reference to Wizkid FC, his supporters online.
Wizkid’s comments came in response to Seun Kuti’s recent criticism of comparisons between Wizkid and his late father, which Seun described as disrespectful and uninformed.
During an Instagram livestream, Seun cautioned Wizkid’s fanbase against portraying the singer as a modern-day Fela.
“Wizkid FC, keep Fela’s name out of your mouths,” he said.
“Comparing Wizkid to Fela is an insult. The shoes are too big to fill.”
Seun also accused some fans of lacking basic understanding of Fela’s legacy. “Your lack of respect does not come from defiance but from ignorance,” he added.
The Afrobeat musician further lamented the impact of fan rivalries on Nigeria’s music scene, arguing that such online battles discourage collaboration among artistes. “Some artistes can’t even work together because of fan wars,” he said.
Describing Wizkid FC as “the most ignorant fanbase in the world,” Seun urged fans to enjoy music without constant comparisons. “If the music truly fills your spirit, you won’t need to compare it to something else,” he stated.
The exchange has since generated widespread reactions online, reigniting debates about legacy, influence, and respect within Nigeria’s music industry.
