Governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress have ruled out supporting political alliances or candidates outside the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The governors said they remained committed to the APC and would work to strengthen the party’s candidates and campaign structure at all levels.
The position was contained in a communique issued after the APC Governors Forum meeting in Abuja on Monday night.
Chairman of the forum and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, said the governors had not entered into any formal agreement with individuals or opposition parties ahead of the elections.
The development comes amid efforts by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and Peoples Democratic Party chieftain, Nyesom Wike, to build a political movement known as the Rainbow Coalition in support of President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.
Wike, who has been involved in political disagreements with some APC governors, had recently alleged that Uzodimma and Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, were among those working against his political interests.
He attributed the alleged opposition to the growing influence of his coalition and its efforts to provide a platform for politicians seeking to challenge candidates backed by the ruling party.
However, the APC governors said they would not support any political arrangement that could undermine the party or create divided loyalty among its members.
Reading the communique after the meeting, Uzodimma said, “The APC Governors Forum unanimously resolved that its members will not participate in, support or endorse any alliance or political arrangement capable of undermining the re-election of Mr President, weakening the APC or adversely affecting any candidate of the party at all levels.”
He further stated that the governors would only campaign for candidates officially sponsored by the APC.
“In other words, the forum has no intention to support any candidate at any level that is not an APC candidate because our candidates who are contesting the election are being sponsored by our party,” Uzodimma said.
The Imo governor added that the forum’s campaign activities would be coordinated with the party’s broader electoral strategy.
He said, “The governors’ campaign commitment is exclusively to all APC candidates. All levels of the party campaign architecture will align with the expectations of Mr President and the strategic objectives of the party.”
The governors’ declaration is expected to further clarify the APC’s position as political alignments and preparations intensify ahead of the 2027 elections.
