Feyenoord returned to winning ways with a convincing 5-2 victory over promoted Cambuur in Leeuwarden on Saturday, but the match was overshadowed by a disturbing fireworks incident that left several supporters injured.
The game was temporarily suspended after Feyenoord fans in the away section set off fireworks and threw flares, with some landing in the family stand.
Five Cambuur supporters were reportedly injured, while Feyenoord goalkeeper Tjark Ernst was also targeted by flares.
Referee Danny Makkelie halted proceedings as the situation was assessed.
The match eventually resumed after officials confirmed that no players, members of staff or match officials had been struck.
Once play restarted, Feyenoord quickly took control.
Gjivai Zechiel opened the scoring after capitalising on a failed clearance by Cambuur goalkeeper Thijs Jansen.
Luciano Valente doubled the visitors’ advantage 10 minutes later, finishing calmly after Gaoussou Diarra created the opening with a powerful run down the left.
Feyenoord added a third goal when Mika Marmol’s cross caused confusion in the Cambuur defence, with Jansen inadvertently turning the ball into his own net.
Ayase Ueda then converted a penalty before the break after Givairo Read was brought down inside the box, sending Feyenoord into half-time with a commanding 4-0 lead.
Cambuur responded strongly after the interval and pulled one back through Rafik El Arguioui, who took advantage of a defensive mistake before finding the net.
El Arguioui scored again in the 80th minute, producing a superb individual effort to reduce the deficit to two goals and briefly raise hopes of an unlikely comeback.
However, Feyenoord ended those hopes late on when Zechiel completed his brace, finishing a move involving Anis Hadj Moussa and Jordan Lotomba.
The 5-2 victory gave Feyenoord their first win after last week’s 2-2 draw with Go Ahead Eagles, while Cambuur were left to reflect on a heavy defeat in a match dominated by the troubling scenes in the stands.
