EPL: Gyökeres, Rice shine as Arsenal beat Burnley 2-0

Arsenal stretched their winning streak to nine games in all competitions after a comfortable 2–0 victory over Burnley at Turf Moor, tightening their grip at the top of the Premier League table.

First-half goals from Viktor Gyökeres and Declan Rice sealed the win for Mikel Arteta’s men, who once again showcased their dominance from set pieces and defensive solidity.

The visitors opened the scoring in the 14th minute through a well-worked corner routine.

Rice’s curling delivery to the back post was headed across goal by Gabriel, allowing Gyökeres to nod home from close range, his fourth league goal of the campaign and sixth overall since joining the Gunners.

The goal also marked Arsenal’s 12th from a set piece this season, more than any other Premier League side.

Buoyed by the early breakthrough, Arsenal pressed for more. Bukayo Saka twice tested goalkeeper Martin Dúbravka, who pulled off two fine saves to keep Burnley in the contest, while Leandro Trossard saw his effort blocked on the line by Quilindschy Hartman and Axel Tuanzebe.

The Gunners eventually doubled their advantage in the 35th minute with a sweeping counterattack. After clearing a Burnley throw-in deep in their own half, Arsenal broke quickly through Trossard, whose pinpoint cross found Rice.

The England international powered a header into the top corner for his second goal involvement of the evening.

Burnley, who had won their previous two league matches to move clear of the relegation zone, were second best throughout the first half and failed to register a single shot on target before the break.

The hosts improved marginally after halftime as Arsenal dropped deeper to conserve energy ahead of their midweek Champions League trip to Prague.

Florentino Luis went closest for Burnley, heading over from a Maxime Estève flick-on midway through the second period.

Late on, Ethan Nwaneri and Christian Norgaard both went close to adding a third for Arsenal, while substitute Marcus Edwards struck the post from a free-kick deep into stoppage time, Burnley’s only real moment of danger.

The result handed Arsenal their seventh clean sheet in 11 league outings and extended their unbeaten run since a 2–1 victory at Newcastle in September.

The Gunners continue to set the pace at the top, combining ruthless efficiency with defensive discipline as their title charge gathers momentum.
