The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has called on Nigerian Army personnel to remain vigilant, disciplined and professional in tackling emerging security threats across the country.
Shaibu made the call on Thursday during the inauguration of newly completed and renovated projects at Adekunle Fajuyi and Letmauck Cantonments in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Represented by the General Officer Commanding, 2 Division, Nigerian Army, Major General Auwalu Mahmuda, the Army chief urged personnel to uphold the military’s core values of loyalty, integrity, discipline and selfless service.
He stressed the need for troops to demonstrate accountability and respect for constituted authority in the discharge of their responsibilities.
According to him, the Army recognises the sacrifices and dedication of personnel, particularly those involved in ongoing operations to maintain peace and security within the division’s area of responsibility.
“As we continue to confront evolving security challenges across the country, the Nigerian Army remains committed to developing a professional, combat-ready and resilient force,” he said.
Shaibu also urged the 81 Battalion to improve its operational effectiveness, strengthen collaboration with other security agencies and remain responsive to emerging security threats.
The projects inaugurated included accommodation units for junior soldiers, family quarters, regimental sergeants major’s houses, an officers’ mess, sports facilities and married officers’ quarters.
The Army chief described the projects as strategic investments in personnel welfare, noting that providing a conducive living environment for officers, soldiers and their families would improve morale, strengthen unity and enhance operational effectiveness.
He also called on the beneficiaries to take responsibility for maintaining the facilities.
“I, therefore, urge all the beneficiaries to take ownership of these facilities, maintain them diligently and ensure that they remain in good condition for the benefit of present and future occupants,” he said.
Earlier, the Commander of 42 Engineer Brigade, Brigadier General Uchechukwu Okoroji, said the poor condition of the structures before their renovation had raised serious welfare concerns.
He noted that improving the living conditions of troops was essential to boosting morale and strengthening their commitment to military operations.
Similarly, the Commanding Officer of 81 Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Chiemezie Asogwa, commended the Army chief for approving the projects.
He said the interventions demonstrated the military leadership’s commitment to improving the welfare and working conditions of personnel and their families under its soldiers-first policy.
