Bundesliga: St. Pauli, Hamburg play goalless draw

St. Pauli climbed off the foot of the Bundesliga table but failed to make up ground on relegation rivals Hamburg after the two sides played out a goalless draw at the Millerntor-Stadion.

Clear-cut chances were at a premium in a cagey contest, with St. Pauli managing just 0.26 expected goals from eight attempts, while Hamburg posted 0.35 xG from five shots.

The point, however, proved useful for both clubs as they continue their battle to avoid the drop.

The opening half was largely uneventful as caution dominated proceedings, though Hamburg suffered an early setback when Alexander Rossing-Lelesiit was forced off inside the first 10 minutes following a challenge from Adam Dzwigala.

After the restart, Hamburg searched for a breakthrough through efforts from Fabio Vieira and Luka Vuskovic, but neither could trouble the scoreboard.

At the other end, Danel Sinani and Arkadiusz Pyrka tested Daniel Heuer Fernandes, who stood firm to preserve the clean sheet.

As the match wore on, urgency faded, with neither side willing to gamble for victory. No shots were registered after the 81st minute as both teams appeared content to protect a valuable point.

Despite the lack of attacking spark, teenage defender Luka Vuskovic caught the eye. The 18-year-old, on loan from Tottenham Hotspur, underlined his potential with a dominant display at the back.

Vuskovic won 12 of his 14 duels, including an impressive 10 of 12 aerial battles, a tally surpassed only by team-mate Nicolas Capaldo (13). He also led all players for touches (137) and completed passes (100) during the match.

Nevertheless, Hamburg’s away woes continued. They remain the only Bundesliga side yet to record a victory on the road this season, drawing three and losing six of their nine away fixtures.

Their total of just three away points makes them the league’s poorest travellers a situation not seen since the 1972–73 campaign, when HSV endured a 14-match winless away run at the start of the season.
