Bundesliga: Hoffenheim edge Leverkusen 1-0

Hoffenheim continued their surge up the Bundesliga table with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday, leaving their visitors frustrated once again.

Wouter Burger’s unexpected strike early in the game proved decisive, securing three points for the hosts at the PreZero Arena.

The goal, a ninth-minute free-kick from the right that sailed over everyone and nestled into the top corner, gave Christian Ilzer’s side the edge in a tightly contested match.

Hoffenheim dominated the opening exchanges, with Fisnik Asllani and Alexander Prass testing Bayer goalkeeper Mark Flekken, while Patrik Schick was kept at bay by Oliver Baumann.

Early in the second half, Prass squandered a rebound opportunity, and Baumann was alert to block Alejandro Grimaldo’s free-kick.

Tim Lemperle had a goal ruled out for offside, but Hoffenheim’s defensive duo, Albian Hajdari and Robin Hranac, repeatedly thwarted Leverkusen’s attacking threats.

The win marked Hoffenheim’s sixth consecutive Bundesliga home victory, an impressive turnaround after a previous run of five straight defeats at PreZero Arena.

The side now sits third in the table, one point clear of RB Leipzig, who host leaders Bayern Munich later on Saturday.

Statistically, Hoffenheim edged Leverkusen in expected goals, producing 1.31 xG to the visitors’ 0.98, reflecting their slight dominance in creating chances.

Overall, the club has only lost once in their last 11 league games (W8 D2 L1), positioning themselves as strong contenders for a Champions League spot.

For Bayer Leverkusen, the result added to a familiar pattern of frustration, with Burger’s free-kick highlighting another set-piece vulnerability, the 12th goal they have conceded this season from dead-ball situations.
