Bundesliga: Leipzig beat Freiburg 2-0

RB Leipzig continued their dominance over SC Freiburg, cruising to a 2-0 victory that not only reinforced their spot in the Bundesliga’s top four but also extended their unbeaten record against Freiburg to an impressive 14 matches.

Despite both teams competing for European qualification, the opening exchanges were surprisingly lackluster, far from the intensity expected from top-six contenders.

It wasn’t until the 20th minute that either side threatened the goal, with Maximilian Eggestein’s header comfortably collected by Peter Gulacsi.

Leipzig largely controlled possession in the attacking third, yet chances were scarce, and they looked far from a team coming off a weekend break.

Their clearest opportunity of the first half came from a swift throw-in five minutes before halftime, which released Christoph Baumgartner in the box, but his volley flew well wide, summarizing a first half that was largely uneventful.

The match sprang to life just 10 minutes after the break. David Raum delivered a teasing cross to the far post, allowing Willi Orban to rise highest and power in his first goal of the season.

Leipzig were not content to sit back. Whatever instructions coach Ole Werner delivered at halftime clearly worked, as the hosts soon doubled their lead.

Once again, a set-piece proved decisive: Baumgartner’s initial header was brilliantly saved by Noah Atubolu, only for Romulo Cardoso to pounce on the rebound and nod home.

Freiburg’s attempts to respond were tepid, a far cry from the resilient side that had collected the most points from losing positions in the Bundesliga before this matchday.

Antonio Nusa came close to adding a third with a deflected effort, but Leipzig had little trouble seeing out the final stages.

The win marked their ninth triumph in 10 competitive home games, further cementing their stronghold at the top.
