American singer, Chris Brown, has avoided prison after being sentenced to eight months, suspended for one year, for assaulting a music producer with a tequila bottle at a London nightclub in 2023.
The Grammy-winning singer, 37, was sentenced on Monday at Southwark Crown Court in London after pleading guilty in July to one count of affray over the incident at Tape, a private nightclub in the upscale Mayfair district, in February 2023.
He had faced a possible prison sentence of up to three years.
Court proceedings revealed that Brown struck his former friend, music producer Abraham Diaw, twice on the head with a bottle during the altercation on the dance floor.
Video footage presented in court showed the singer being restrained and pulled away from the victim.
Delivering his judgment, Judge Tony Baumgartner described the attack as dangerous, noting the potential consequences of repeatedly striking someone on the head with a glass bottle.
“The repeated use of a glass bottle in that way, especially aimed at the head, was plainly dangerous, it carried the risk of delivering a more serious injury than was ultimately sustained,” the judge said.
However, Baumgartner ruled that Brown did not warrant an immediate custodial sentence, citing his guilty plea and other mitigating circumstances.
Although the court acknowledged the singer’s previous convictions, the judge noted that he had maintained a clean record in recent years.
Brown left the United Kingdom following the nightclub incident but was arrested at a hotel in Manchester in May 2025 after arriving in the city for a concert.
He was subsequently granted bail of £5m, equivalent to about $6.7m, which enabled him to continue touring Europe and North America last summer.
The singer rose to fame as a teenager in 2005 and won his first Grammy Award for Best R&B Album in 2011 for F.A.M.E.
He secured a second award in the same category in 2025 for 11:11 (Deluxe).
Brown has faced several legal challenges over the years.
In 2009, he was convicted of a felony assault involving his then-girlfriend, Rihanna, shortly before the pair were scheduled to perform at the Grammy Awards.
He has also been arrested in connection with altercations in several US states.
In 2019, French authorities arrested him in Paris and questioned him on suspicion of rape, but he was released without charge.
