WAFCON: Super Falcons’ Babajide excited with Player of the Match Award

Nigeria’s Super Falcons forward, Rinsola Babajide, has expressed delight after being named Player of the Match following her influential display in the team’s emphatic 6-2 victory over Egypt at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations on Wednesday.

Making her first start of the tournament, the winger produced an impressive performance, providing two assists as Nigeria secured a convincing win to book a place in the quarter-finals.

Babajide constantly troubled Egypt’s backline with her pace and movement, helping the Super Falcons dominate the contest from the opening whistle.

Her first assist came late in the opening half when she picked out Gift Monday with a precise pass, allowing the substitute to double Nigeria’s advantage before the break.

After Egypt pulled one back, Babajide was again involved in Nigeria’s attacking brilliance. In the 57th minute, she created another scoring opportunity, setting up fellow substitute Uchenna Kanu to restore the Super Falcons’ two-goal cushion.

Reflecting on the victory, Babajide said, “I got two assists, but I am very happy about the progress. We knew what was at stake and we managed to pull through.”

Speaking about receiving the Player of the Match honour, she added, “I’ll probably keep the MOTM trophy somewhere in my house for my family.”

The Roma attacker is expected to play an even bigger role as Nigeria prepare for Sunday’s quarter-final clash against Cameroon.
