S’Eagles Okoye faces ban over betting scandal

Super Eagles and Udinese goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye, faces the possibility of a lengthy ban of up to four years after being referred to the disciplinary commission.

The Nigerian shot-stopper is under scrutiny for allegedly picking up a yellow card on purpose during the 64th minute of Udinese’s Serie A match against Lazio on March 11, 2024. He was cautioned for time-wasting while his team was ahead 2-1.

According to Football Italia, the incident drew attention after a surge in suspicious betting activity was detected. Bets placed on Okoye receiving a yellow card at odds of 8/1 reportedly led to over €120,000 in winnings.

Investigations have also extended to three of Okoye’s acquaintances, who are suspected of involvement in the scheme.

Authorities have now escalated the allegations from irregular betting to the more severe charge of sporting fraud.

Okoye, 25, joined Udinese from English club Watford in 2023.
