Belgian side, Union Saint-Gilloise caused an upset on Tuesday, defeating Turkish giants Galatasaray 1-0 at RAMS Park.
Despite being out-possessed for much of the game, Union’s clinical finishing proved decisive.
The match’s only goal came in the 57th minute, when Promise David latched onto a perfectly timed assist from Adem Zorgane and fired home from the center of the box.
The strike left Galatasaray frustrated, as their dominance in possession, 66.5%, failed to translate into goals.
Galatasaray’s attacking woes continued despite a star-studded lineup that included Ilkay Gundogan, Leroy Sane, and Mauro Icardi.
The hosts managed just three shots on target from 13 attempts, with Union goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen pulling off key saves, including stops from Baris Alper Yilmaz and Gabriel Sara.
A moment of near-success saw Sara hit the post in the 27th minute.
The match also saw disciplinary issues pile up for the home side. Defender Arda Unyay was sent off in the 89th minute, receiving a second yellow card after fouling Sofiane Boufal, leaving Galatasaray to finish the game with ten men.
Earlier, Ismail Jakobs had been forced off with an injury in the 53rd minute, with Unyay coming on as his replacement.
Union Saint-Gilloise’s tactical discipline and defensive resilience proved decisive. The Belgian side, with only four shots on target, managed to hold off Galatasaray’s relentless attacks while safeguarding their slender lead.
The result is a significant blow to Galatasaray’s UEFA Champions League ambitions, while Union continues to make waves in Europe’s elite club competition.
